What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is cancer of the "mesothelium" caused by exposure to asbestos.

The mesothelium, according to the medical dictionary, covers most of the internal organs of the body.  The cancer spreads rapidly from the mesothelium to the organs that it covers.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer.  Most often, the person who has this cancer has had some exposure to asbestos.  The exposure may have been direct such as handling the material, or indirect such as coming in contact with the clothing of someone who handled the material.

The fact that you have been exposed to asbestos does not mean that you have or will have mesothelioma.  The diagnosis is based on medical information and can only be made by an expert in that area of medicine.

If you suspect that you have had contact with asbestos, your first call should be to your medical provider.  If your doctor determines that you have symptoms or other evidence of the disease, you should then get advice on whether or not you have a claim.   Mesothelioma lawyers have learned a lot about the disease and have been very successful in obtaining the large settlements that are needed in order to cover the terrible financial losses and the suffering that a family or individual goes through with mesothelioma.

There are some encouraging examples of people who have refused to accept the "death sentence" that is associated with a diagnosis of mesothelioma.  Paul Kraus is such a person and he has written a book that is a must read for victims and their families.  See the link to Surviving Mesothelioma on the resources panel to the right of this article.  For a limited time, Paul is offering a free copy of his book to people diagnosed with mesothelioma.

If you or a family member have been exposed to asbestos, get in touch with your doctor.  If mesothelioma is diagnosed, contact an attorney who handles mesothelioma claims and do it immediately.  There are time limits for filing such claims
